Phew. Watched the documentary I Am Not Your Negro based on James Baldwin’s unfinished memoir last night and it nearly tore my heart out. Dr. King and Malcolm X were elegant orators, but I’m not sure anyone has ever spoken more clearly or more cuttingly about the issues we face in America over racism and our identity as a people and a nation. If you want to spend some moments in serious, deep, raw contemplation of this society and the history of our country, there is no one better to take that journey with than Mr. Baldwin. His genius and talent with words could have applied to anything, but he applied them to the things that touch us all at our core. I highly recommend watching this film at your earliest opportunity. Rest in peace, Mr. Baldwin. We will try to make the vision you dedicated your life to attainable.
